English for Academic Purposes: Practice for the Computer-Based TOEFL B2

Entry requirement:

  • English B1

Students should make sure they have achieved level B1 English as outlined in the self-assessment grid (Source: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Before registering:

For self-assessment, the online placement test is required. The result should be equivalent to the course entry requirement. Please print the result, sign and date it, and bring it with you to class on the first day of teaching.

Note: The course is conducted entirely in ENGLISH and is targeted at students who have achieved a B1 level English.

The TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) is now the only version available in Germany. It includes speaking questions in addition to the familiar listening, reading, and writing sections. The emphasis is on the "integration" of the four skills.

This course provides detailed information about the tests' four sections and gives participants the opportunity to practice all the required skills, as well as acquire advanced vocabulary. Discussions also include various TOEFL-related topics, including academic life in the US, which is tangentially addressed in various parts of the test.

Special emphasis is placed on written academic English, with a focus on sentence structure, writing paragraphs, and punctuation.

Classroom exercises cover speaking, listening, and reading, whereas the writing section is practiced in the form of homework assignments to be submitted via email. Class speaking exercises are filmed and graded; students receive copies of all class-related work.

In accordance with TU Berlin regulations, all films and other class-related work are kept for two years and then permanently destroyed.

Attendance of 80% of the classes is required by the ZEMS for all courses.
Presence is mandatory from the very beginning.

Fachorientiertes Englisch für Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften B2

Entry requirement:

  • English B2

Students should make sure they have achieved level B2 English as outlined in the self-assessment grid (Source: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Before registering:

For self-assessment, the online placement test is required. The result should be equivalent to the course entry requirement. All students should submit their result (printed, dated and signed) in class on the first day of teaching.

The course introduces students of science and engineering to the requirements of scientific communication, considering issues of audience, purpose and format. Strategies and techniques will be developed to learn and apply the principles of scientific communication. General guidelines will be provided on how to write a clear and efficient technical paper.

Students will develop strategies to write and speak clear, comprehensible and concise English in interdisciplinary contexts. In short papers and presentations students will present their solution to subject-specific problems. They will be required to provide a clear structure and evidence to support their argument. Lines of enquiry, topics and debates will focus on a range of concepts and issues that discuss technologies and engineering in a global context.

Subject-specific information and argumentation do not rely on any one particular formula nor are they the same in every technical or academic field. Students will be encouraged to meet this challenge with confidence. Active participation, peer interaction and peer feedback will be expected in class. Participation in class will be based on autonomous work outside class of up to eight hours per week. Intensive enquiry based reading and self-directed work outside class and informed contributions in class will be required.

Grading will be based on a set of integrated assignments. To successfully complete the course, students will need to submit coursework as required and give a presentation. Regular attendance is mandatory from the first day of teaching (minimum of 80% attendance).

Advanced Scientific Communication Skills: This class will focus on communication skills. We will analyze and practice using different styles of scientific communication meant for a variety of audiences. This includes learning the differences between formal, neutral and informal language. You will learn how to communicate effectively about science in several situations such as giving a presentation, proposing a project, etc., and you will learn how to work effectively with others by giving constructive criticism and being diplomatic.

As everyone in the class will have a different degree program, you will have different vocabulary needs. Therefore, you will independently choose scientific topics for written assignments and presentations so that you can broaden your knowledge of the vocabulary within your field.

Your grade will be determined by writing tasks and one presentation. We will take one or two field trips, the day and time of which will be determined in class. Entrance fees range from 0 to 5 Euros.

Students should make sure they have achieved level C1 English as outlined in the self-assessment grid (Source: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

This English course will emphasize audience-focused writing and presentations. You will learn how to write an argumentative scientific paper, create an academic poster, and how to present to both expert audiences as well as non-expert audiences.

Topics will relate to the social, economic and ecological pillars of sustainability and to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This class is open to students from all faculties (and is the equivalent of the previous ZEMS class, 'Fachorientiertes Englisch für Planungs-, Bau-, und Umweltwissenschaften).

Your grade will be determined by individual and team presentations and academic writing tasks that center on concrete case-studies within the realm of sustainability. You will choose your own project topics so as to gain experience in English-language research on your chosen topics. In this way, you will train vocabulary and communication styles that are common to your chosen project topics, making the course as ‘tailor-made’ to your needs as possible.

We will take two field trips, the place, day and time of which will be determined in class. Entrance fees may cost a total of  0-10 Euros, depending on the excursion.

Presence is mandatory from the very beginning.
Attendance of 80% of the classes is required by the ZEMS for all courses.
